I am a french horn, mellophone, and brass clinician in Cincinnati, Ohio. I earned my Masters degree in french horn performance in 2013 from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. I offer virtual, in person, one-on-one, and group lesson options. I have coached french horn, mellophone, and brass sections for over 15 years and currently work with students from 15 different school districts in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky region. I am also a guest lecturer at the collegiate level, sharing what I have learned about playing injuries and highlighting the research being done on the anatomy of the brass player’s embouchure.
As a private horn teacher and brass clinician, I teach my students that they can do hard things. I compassionately nurture my students to find their own powerful inner voice and vast potential as musicians and humans. I give my students a comprehensive technical and musical foundation and tailor my teaching approach to their individual learning and motivation styles. It is my life’s passion to help nurture students to realize their untapped potential, gain self-confidence, and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment in what they can accomplish on their instruments. Horn is hard, and YOU can do hard things (and do them really well)!
I also enjoy an incredibly fulfilling and varied performance career. I am the 4th horn of the Queen City Opera and am a founding member of the Wayside Winds, a professional woodwind quintet. I perform for many musical theater pits across the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Northern Kentucky regions. I also have performed with the Dayton Philharmonic, West Virginia, Kentucky, Springfield, and Richmond Symphony Orchestras.

Recomendations
- “I took lessons from Jeremy Cotton for years, and since my last lesson I’ve known him as a friend for several years more. With knowledge in all styles, he is an excellent guitarist as well as an excellent teacher. He stands out: many guitar teachers, when it comes to students, have forgotten that they were once students themselves. Jeremy has a gift for teaching because he remembers all of the hurdles he jumped over during his years of learning. but perhaps more importantly, he has a big heart, and is thoughtful, honest and caring in everything he does.” – Eugene Hoffman
- “I thought that Jeremy did a great job in keeping my daughter focused and motivated in her guitar lessons. He’s a great musician wonderful teacher and a friend to his students.” – Peter Wimberg
- “Jeremy has taught my 8-year-old daughter Emilia for 10 months. She really enjoys her time in lessons and Jeremy works to find her music she would enjoy learning…. Jeremy has always been helpful and accommodating. In short, I would recommend Jeremy to other parents looking for guitar instruction. ” – Margaret Ranalli
- “My daughter, Josie, has taken guitar lessons From Jeremy Cotton for the past 2 1/2 years. During that time, we have come to know him very well. He has been an outstanding teacher for Josie. He relates very well both to her and to me and me, and he communicates well. He has allowed her to progress at a very good pace, pushing her gently when needed. Josie is very much enjoying her experience with guitar. I am sure Jeremy is one of the main reasons for this. I would not hesitate to recommend him as a guitar teacher to students of all ages, skill levels and styles of play.” – Brian Schiff
- “Jeremy is a wonderful guitar teacher. Over the last two years, he has provided a great mix of skills for our daughter (age 11). She has learned to read music but also to play by ear and memorize music. If she has a favorite song she wants to learn (Jingle Bells, Star Wars, Plain white Ts), he adds that to the lesson. She also learns about famous guitar players and can play songs from classic rock to classical. It is clear at recitals that Jeremy has a great rapport with his students and always puts even shy or nervous kids at ease.” – Laura Jenkins
- “Mr. Cotton has taught my son music lessons this past year. I have been very impressed with the level of knowledge, dedication and patience he has demonstrated on a consistent basis. My son looks forward to his lessons with Mr. Cotton, and is disappointed if he ever has to miss. Mr. Cotton engenders a sincere enthusiasm for music which could benefit and inspire anyone. Mr. Cotton is friendly and a great listener too. I have heard my son ask many questions during his lessons and he has always received a thoughtful and helpful answer. Mr. Cotton has provided sound advice about learning techniques and helpful tips with regard to my son’s saxophone. He has also been very flexible with my son’s busy schedule, and has accommodated it whenever asked. I and my family hold Jeremy Cotton with the highest regard. We hope to continue working with him for a long time, and would give a most high recommendation for him.” – Sheila Crist-Kruzner
- Jeremy Cotton is a very patient teacher who strives to see all of his students excel. He is multi-talented as he has taught our son both saxophone and guitar. On guitar, our son had learned some fun, popular tunes. When he plays and I know what it is, it is rewarding for both of us. I would happily recommend him as an instructor. – Cathy Fowler
- Jeremy is a good teacher. I like his teaching style. When I don’t get something, we go back and practice it. When we practice he helps me by playing guitar along with me, and/or on his cool drum machine. – Mitchell Rueve, age 14
- “I started out not even knowing how to hold a guitar. Jeremy helped me to learn the basics, but also be inspired to learn more. He gave me the basic direction but also gave me freedom to choose songs I learned, which made the lessons fun and enjoyable.” – Emma Heldman
- Jeremy Cotton taught my twin sons at the Musical Arts Center in Cinti., Ohio for 4 years while they attended Walnut Hills High School. He was an excellent teacher. They loved going to his lessons and hated to miss his instruction when there was a conflict in their schedules. They both moved into the Wind Ensemble because of his instruction. – Chris Carton
- My guitar lesson with Jeremy was something I looked forward to every week. I was a novice guitar player of ten years and I only played within my comfort zone, never stretching my skills to the point that I could improve. Working with Jeremy, we identified the areas of guitar playing where I needed to challenge myself and he provided plenty of practice material to help me develop those areas where I was weak. Jeremy has degrees in music and music education and I felt that gave me the advantage of having a guitar lesson that was also a music theory and music history lesson… two other things that I knew little about. I recommend Jeremy to all my friends who mention an interest in music lessons. We rocked, we joked and I got better at guitar. I look forward to starting my lessons back up with Jeremy again this Spring. – Chris Nye
- I have been going to Mr. Cotton for 1-1/2 years. I play the saxophone. When I started I had no clue what I was doing, but after practicing and spending time with Mr Cotton I have improved a lot. Mr Cotton is amazing, and makes learning how to play an instrument fun. – Dan Sauers
- My son Daniel started sax lessons about a year and a half ago with Mr Cotton. He was almost a teenager, and had not had any musical training. Mr Cotton started at “square one” with Daniel, and I am amazed at the progress my son has made. I actually enjoy hearing him practice and tapping his feet on the floor above me. Daniel has learned both technique and theory, but equally important, he has a growing appreciation and interest in music. I highly recommend Mr Cotton. – Jennifer Sauers

Mindfulness. Representation. Connection.
These three words embody my studio and teaching.
All three are born out of my own rocky relationship with piano. I’ve battled negative self-talk, feelings of worthlessness & inadequacy, performance anxiety, disastrous performances.
So I know how difficult learning & cultivating a musical craft can be. I know the ways we tear ourselves down. I know that unless we have the skills to navigate through the challenging times, piano lessons can constantly feel like a burden instead of a joy.
No matter our age, mindfulness, representation, and connection support us along the path to developing fruitful musical lives.
And yes, I teach all the necessities of playing piano: technique, aural skills, note reading, sight-reading, etc. because you can’t truly connect to the musical world if you don’t know the vocabulary. But we can’t learn the necessary vocabulary if we don’t feel safe enough to try new things. My studio is that safe space.

Hello! I am a local musician who has been teaching private lessons for the last five years. I have my undergraduate degree in vocal music from Northern Kentucky University where I studied under Dr. Jason Vest. During my time there, I received many valuable performance opportunities in various musical styles. I performed a leading role in an opera, toured Canada with the NKU Chamber Choir, and performed in the school’s vocal jazz ensemble.
Since graduating, I have only expanded my musical experience. I studied jazz piano for a year under the direction of local jazz pianist Dan Karlsberg. I was a section leader for two years in the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord choir. I also perform periodically through the city.
My teaching philosophy revolves around making sure my students are comfortable in their musical environment. I approach my lessons as a friend. I don’t believe anyone should feel stressed intimidated by music lessons, so I do everything I can to meet students at their level, whatever it may be.
Over my teaching career, I have taught students of all ages. My students have been as young as five all the way up to older adults. It is never a bad time to start your musical journey. For piano lessons, I have had great success with beginner to intermediate students. On the vocal side, I have helped beginners find their voice, intermediate singers become more confident, and advanced singers prepare for auditions (from local theater shows to college entrance).
I hope to help anyone who desires find their own joy in music making!
